Couch to 5k – Week 2 – Lessons learned by a Rookie Runner

  1. If you run in the morning, resist the temptation to look out the window before you start. Drizzle, rain and even rough winds will sure take the wind out of your sails. Let the weather be a surprise, deal with it once you’ve closed the door behind you. Showers won’t kill anyone – they actually can be utterly refreshing!
  2. By all means appreciate nature mindfully whilst you run – but try to keep focused on your route and not on the people (w/ dogs) that might me passing. As a new runner, guessing what they might think of my many desperate gasps (and the loud instructions of my C25K coach, Laura) really puts me off and knocks my confidence. This is the last thing you need 5 mins into a 25 mins run.
  3. Resist the temptation to concentrate solely on speed. A good consistent light jog is much better than an epic sprint followed by a long excruciating crawl back.
  4. This run might be important to you, but bear in mind, there will be other runs, hundreds of other runs (hopefully). So, if things don’t go your way this time, don’t feel too disheartened.
  5. Don’t compare yourself to others. We are all different and our journeys are different. If it’s a life style change  you’re after (like myself), we have a lifetime to master the art.Concentrating too hard on others and/or comparing ourselves to them will more often than not make us feel like underachievers and also very frustrated. We might even give it all up if these negative feelings set us back too much! It’s counterproductive.
  6. Feeling disgust at one’s own self image and even at a lack of self confidence isn’t wrong – both are human feelings/emotions. But in order to grow, we can’t prosper through hate and self-loathing. It’s easier if we try to love where we’re at at any given moment. Moments will pass, but surely, if we make the prolonged effort to see our goals and new lifestyle ideas through, we will feel better in time (I struggle a bit with this one!)
  7. Try to eat clean, eat healthily and colourfully. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep.
  8. If YOU are  not worth the effort. Who is? So much of it is about taking responsibility about ourselves. In doing so, we should also remember that Rome wasn’t build in a day.
  9. Don’t lose the ability to dream.
  10. Don’t live in hope. Live with self-belief.
